Metal Blade founder Brian Slagel mentioned Metallica’s Grammy Awards mishap, saying on The Jasta Show(transcribed by UG):
“If you’re going to a Metallica show, and you haven’t seen this and you don’t wanna know what’s gonna happen, just fast forward it for like the next minute.
“There’s an amazing part of the Metallica show where James comes up there between the songs and taps on the microphone, ‘Hey is this working? You guys hear me out there? Do you hear me ok? You guys can hear me? Here’s a song where the microphone will work tonight.’
“And they go to ‘Moth Into Flame.’ It’s hysterical. He says is better than I do, but it’s really fun.
“By the way, that whole stupid Metallica thing [was caused by] these ridiculous dancers up there – one of the idiots kicked the microphone thing out.
“And they had local crew working who had no idea how to fix it. That’s why that happened.
“I tweeted about it and people were yelling at me. So, they played the Palladium [in NYC] – after that show, I went there, the sound guy was there…
“‘What the hell happened?’ He said, ‘Yeah, basically one of the dancers kicked the plug out, and the local people couldn’t figure it out for half the song.'”
As you can see from the official footage, James Hetfield did indeed add the mic joke half before the band performs “Moth Into Flame.”
